Antioxidants 101

Antioxidants 101

Antioxidant have been getting a lot of buzz across the skincare world. We asked Dr. Klein + Dr. Mraz to explain how they work and which ones are best for a variety of skin types and concerns.

The headline: Antioxidants neutralize free radicals.

Okay…but what is a free radical? Free radicals are unstable electrons seeking their mate (electrons like to be in pairs), and they cause can cause cellular damage when they grab an extra electron from existing molecules within the skin. This causes damage to our skin's cells, proteins and DNA, which can accelerate the signs of skin aging - this process of damage is referred to as "oxidative stress."

Where do free radicals come from? They are produced in the body through natural biological processes, as well as introduced from an outside source like smoking, sun exposure or pollutants.

How do antioxidants work? Antioxidants bind with free radicals in order to make them stable atoms, thus neutralizing them and preventing further damage. Antioxidants both protect and repair, which is why they have a good place in both the morning and evening skincare routines.

Which one do I choose? There are many antioxidants that benefit the skin, here are some of the most popular along with their “specialty.”

Vitamin C

  • What it’s good for: Aging and Hyperpigmentation

  • What it does: brightens and evens out skin tone while supporting collagen synthesis

Resveratrol

  • What it’s good for: Acne and Antiaging

  • What it does: soothes with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, while brightening the complexion.

Vitamin E

  • What it’s good for: Dry skin

  • What it does: strengthens the skin barrier function to improve moisture retention. Also supports healing wounds and can improve the appearance of scars. Note: not the choice for you if you’re acne prone as Vitamin E can be acnegenic.

Green Tea/EGCG

  • What it’s good for: Oily skin

  • What it does: regulates sebum production

Niacinamide

  • What it’s good for: pretty much all skin types!

CoQ10

  • What it’s good for: aging skin

As an overarching rule of thumb, look for products with claims backed by clinical trials and be sure to store carefully, exposure to air can compromise the product’s effectiveness. Always apply an antioxidant serum to clean skin for optimal absorption.
